Leonardo DiCaprio
is transforming his 104-acre Belizean island into a luxury eco-resort
complete with villas ranging between $5 million and $15 million each.
The actor, who reportedly bought the island off the coast of Belize nearly a decade ago for $1.75 million, plans to transform it into a natural haven with everything from infinity pools to 'fish shelters'.
According to the New York Times, he has now teamed up with Paul Scialla, the chief executive of New York development firm Delos, and plans to open the resort in 2018.
It's his latest project as a keen activist, and his impressive plans will see the island transformed into a huge conservation area and natural haven.
"It was like heaven on earth," he told the newspaper when opening up about his 2005 visit to the remote location.
"And almost immediately, I found this opportunity to purchase an island there."
The project, called Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island, will welcome visitors with 68 resort villas and 48 private houses - with some reportedly being sold for between $5 million and $15 million each, while others will be open for guests - along with infinity pools, and of course the incredible views.
Leo also hopes to return the island to its former glory, as it's recently suffered from coastline erosion, deforestation and over-fishing.
According to the New York Times, a nursery will be set up to grow indigenous marine grass to support a manatee conservation area, and mangrove trees will be replanted to replace invasive species.
Plans show villas running along the water's edge, with fishing pools beneath.
"The main focus is to do something that will change the world," the actor added.
"I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement."
Leo owns the island with partner with Jeff Gram, who owns Cayo Espanto Island Resort, a luxury vacation spot nearby.
The island's development will also be monitored by a group of scientists who will moniter the impact it's having on the environment, the paper reports.
